As much as my post the other day was about Quackery, I thought I’d round things out a bit with a post about some credible research into a cure for cancer; the Kanzius Cancer Treatment. This research is being conducted in conjunction with the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and involves destroying cancer cells using radio waves. The great things about the treatment are it is non-invasive, it does not carry with it the debilitating effects of the current therapies, and it has the potential to work with metastatic cancer. Here’s a little blurb from this article I read:
The treatment concept is relatively simple but difficult to achieve: unique physical characteristics (a protein, a receptor, etc.) of specific cancer cell lines are identified, a “targeting molecule” is designed that will seek out and attach to or penetrate through that unique site, the targeting molecule is chemically attached to a gold nanoparticle or carbon nanotube, and the combination is injected into the bloodstream of the patient. The targeting molecule(s) eventually delivers the nanoparticle(s) to the cancer cell(s). It is particularly exciting that metastatic cancer cells might also be targeted. Exposure of the area to the radiowaves causes the nanoparticles to warm sufficiently to kill the cancer cells.

This research looks really promising so far. From what I understand it’s been successful in animal trials, and that’s really exciting. Hopefully I’ll never need another treatment, but if I ever do I pray it’s after they perect the use of this machine
